Hi all,
I've been having a weird little problem with the clarion A not speaking cleanly (producing an undertone) since a recent overhaul of my 1983-vintage R13. At first I thought that perhaps the Galper key I had installed at the time of the overhaul might be the culprit (though that doesn't seem to make much sense - not that I'm an expert on such matters). After a suck test (passed) I had a gander down the upper joint bore and noticed that the thumb tube is rotated about 10 degrees clockwise. Could this be causing the problem?

Since all I have ever noticed is a seemless tube (both from the interior and exterior.....as far as I can tell), how do you know the thumb tube is "out of orientation?"

Most thumb tubes have a cut-out across the inside (bore) end that follows the radius of the bore when installed correctly. Buffet thumb tubes made with the fluted or ridged sides can be difficult to line up correctly as the flutes/ridges run at angles and the whole thumb tube can be forced to rotate when it's being fitted so the cut-out on the inside end doesn't follow the circumference of the bore.
I don't think it will have any impact if it's out of line with the bore as there are some clarinets where the inside end of the thumb tube is completely squared off instead of being radiused. It will have more impact on the tuning of the lower register F# when played with LH finger 1 alone (as F# issues from the thumb tube), but makers will account for that and make the diameter of the thumb tube accordingly depending if the inside end is squared off or radiused.
Maybe the diameter of the speaker tube is either too wide or too narrow as the diameter and shape of the speaker tube can cause ghost tones in the upper part of the upper register if it's not right. You'd have to seek advice from a clarinet acoustician on this as they'd know more about this sort of thing.
