 Repair in midwest U.S.

Hi,

I'm a high school student in Champaign, Illinois (150 miles south of Chicago, more or less). I have owned a very faithful Buffet R-13 for four years and have never needed to have an inkling of maintenance done on it. With my junior year at school looming, however, I am looking to have the horn overhauled (complete pad replacement, all the screws tightened, the works).

I would be perfectly willing to send it away for a couple of weeks (since I will be on vacation for two weeks at the beginning of August anyway), and in fact this is what I intend to do, but I'm not sure where to have this service done. I'd prefer to have it done by someone within a couple of state borders so I don't have to send it too far away. (Chicago area is fine; I've also heard about someplace in Ohio, although I know no details.)

Any help you can provide (price estimates, contact details, websites, etc.) is much appreciated.

-GJC

I would find who the members of the chicargo symphony use. never send your instrument away. go in person to meet the repairman.

You are in Brannen territory. They are in Illinois.

They will arrange a day for you to send it and will have it back within the week.

They are very precise on the shipping instructions.

They are not cheap this service will run between $400.00 and $500.00 but they are recognized as one of the best clarinet repair shops around. They are a sneezy / woodwind sponsor too.

I also would like to recommend the repairperson at International Musical Suppliers in DesPlaines, IL. Tom Fritz was formerly with the Buffet factory distribution center when it was in Libertyville, IL and is an expert in all manner of clarinet adjustment and repair, especially the Buffet line.

I have sent both my Bb and A clarinets to Brannen Woodwinds to be overhauled. The most recent of the two clarinets was the Buffet R-13 Bb. I have met the Brannen's and they are very nice people. IMO they are one of the best. The Bb came back dramatically better. I couldn't be happier with my clarinet and with its tone quality etc. You should talk to Mr. or Mrs. Brannen about your clarinet so they'll have a better idea of what you have in mind for your clarinet. Their website is www.brannenwoodwinds.com, their number is (847)866-7576. Whomever you decide to send your clarinet to, I hope you love the results!

If you take it to the Brannen's, I recommend Bill over Linda,
IMHO. And since you are so close, you could just go up there
for the day (or two) while they do the work. This saves money
on shipping and worries as it is being shipped.

My E11 is currently with Sam Gordon whose office is in the Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue in the South Loop in Chicago. This is the first time I've brought it in but he comes recommended by several other woodwind players. I think he's listed in the phone book under Gordon Woodwind Repair. Area code is 312.

Greg!! I'm surprised you haven't contacted me. We are lucky to have a lot of good repairman in Illinois. The top four I would say would be, Brannen woodwinds of evanston, Rick Sayre of Lombard, Sam Gordon of Chicago, and The guy at international musicial suppliers. Personally, I bring my horns to brannens. They do amazing work. But they do an overhaul service to your clarinet. They rip off all the pads and stuff and cork the top joint ect. Check out their website. Rick Sayre is great though! He will tune up your clarinet for you. See brannens wont do this, they require that you have the service first. If money is an issue go with sayre. If money isn't an issue, go with either brannens or sayre. The main reason i went with brannen is becuase they are a little cheaper. Like 400 for a clarinet and 30 dollars a visit, sayre is like 450 and 50 dollars a clarinet per check up. Do whats ever good. Get in touch with me... I owe you for a box of readys from the camp at U of I. Cya! :)

I've been taking my Buffet R13 A and Bb clarinets to Rick Sayre for the past 5 years or so and he is amazing. Excellent work and if you make an appointment well enough in advance will finish it within a day. I've never paid as much as the previous replier to this message, and I use mine a great deal and they always need a lot of work done after a busy yeat at school. Definitely contact him and ask for some rates. (630) 916-1525

Good luck!
