The placing I prefer is on the inside of the first clarinet row, assuming that the principal clarinetist sits on the outside of the first or second row.

I just played Eb at the New England Intercollegiate Band Association Festival and I actually sat on the outside, right next to the 1st seat clarinet.

Hi, Eilidh [Helen?] -
You sit where the conductor/director asks you to sit.

Ideally centre of the front row is correct but this is assuming that you are sitting with the clarinet section on one side and the oboe on the other because the less imaginative Eb scoring tends to double one or the other of these parts.
Also you can hear what's going on in the flute (and pic) section from there and try to stay in tune with the top of the band!!

Ive usually been placed in the center between the first clarinets and the flutes which i find has helped when i either double first or flute parts or when i pick up the end of high runs etc and also so the director can shoot me the "vulcan death stare" if i get carried away and have too good of a time hitting the altissimo G's and D's like i have in Finale during my concert this sat. <G>
