The "Marcellus" embouchure that Gregory spoke of has spread around the country. I've studied with three Marcellus students and they all have the exact same embouchure. Considering that a good percentage of professional clarinetists and clarinet professors were students of Marcellus (probably even more than Russianoff), I think that this "'O' with the lips, 'E' with the tongue" embouchure is going to become a standard. Hopefully! :-)

You would think that there is a consistency in what we teach...but sound is a very subjective concept. I am interested to see if there is any consensus on what is characteristic tone quality on our instrument. If we can get to that point, maybe we can some day apply consistency to our pedagogy of embouchure.

Last night I read the section of Pino's book that deals with "National Schools" of clarinet playing. He has some very interesting ideas as to how the different clarinet sounds have developed and survived over the years. You might want to take a look at it.
