 alternate barrel question
Author: Irwin J
Date:   2015-02-23 04:34

My new Buffet Festival came with a 650 barrel and a 660 barrel. I've been using the 650 and intonation is good throughout the range. When if ever will I use the 660 barrel?

Even though you may play in tune with the 650 (I'm assuming A=440 for you), when it comes to playing in tune with others, matching them, even if they're not in tune, is more important that being in tune.

If you are in tune and don't match them, you are not "in tune."

Here is where barrels of different lengths can come in handy, and a longer barrel often beats a tuning ring.

When you get a high pitched MP or when you are cooking your clarinet under hot stage lights.

I use a 62 and 65 mm barrel, when changing MP, depending on venue (but I'm not playing Buffets).

Thumbs up on the Festival.

Tom
