I need help determining the value of three inherited clarinets. Two are professional level, an A clarinet and a Bb clarinet, made in France by Buffet Crampon in the 1930's or 40's, said to be an R-13. Also and equally old bass clarinet made by H. Bettoney in Boston. All are in excellent condition. Help will be appreciated.

Pictures showing condition would help but basically we are probably only talking a few hundred dollars each.
1930/40 clarinets were given a catalog identity as R13 but this bears no relationship to what is generally known as the modern R13 which only came into production in early/mid 1950s.

Assuming they need work (which they probably do)
Bb: $200
A: $400
Bass: $400
Keep in mind market values vary.

Hi Dan,
I'm new to the board so my input is not high value here (yet) but I have been repairing, restoring and selling instruments for about 35 years. Basically you haven't provided enough information here to even put a ballpark price on your instruments. Condition, of course is of primary importance along with the exact model info. Good, clear pictures and the serial numbers would be very helpful. Of course the R-13's are about the most well known and sought after Buffets, but they are of 1950's and newer vintage. There aren't any R-13's from the 30's and 40's period, although the pre-R-13 instruments can be quite collectable. don't forget to try the http://www.woodwindforum.com bulletin board too.

Checking eBay's SOLD listings is also a good indication of value.

There was a pre-polycylindrical bore model called the R-13 from what I've read. Indeed it has not a lot to do with the model we know from the 50's on by that name.
