I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the old Barbier project horn I've been working on came with a Selmer mouthpiece! I thought it was unmarked until my husband pointed out a super faint inscription that I had missed. On the table it is printed H SELMER and then PARIS beneath, in a sort of oval-ish shape (no outline) and then on the flat portion (where the reed lays) at the very bottom is HS* crookedly stamped. It is all gouged up and nasty...very discolored (pea soup!)...I have no idea why or how someone could have done that to a poor mouthpiece! I took a very light nail polisher thing I had and lightly buffed at the gouges on the beak portion, as I know that is just cosmetic. There are gouges on the side rails, though, and I'm afraid to touch those. The tip and facing curve look fine. It sounded nice (to my potato ears anyhow) except it has a tendency to squeak and is a little "stuffy"...I surmise there is air leaking from the gouged portions of the side rails. Can I buff those out without hurting it (being careful to not get up into where it starts curving) or...can I fill it in with some sort of epoxy? I really don't have the bucks to get it fixed/refaced/restored properly and this is just a fun project for me anyhow, so I thought I'd just tinker at it to see if I can get it "up & running."
Also, it seems very old, maybe even original. The barrel that came with is also HR (and a matching pea green to the MP) and seems very short (63mm?). Are HR barrels common to be original to an otherwise wooden clarinet? It's unmarked but clearly matches the the MP in age and material. \
I've read about Selmer HS and S and * and ** and ovals and tables.....and it's all a little confusing....I'm just trying to figure out how old this MP may possibly be and it's potential. I'll upload a rough rendition of the logo (which is unphotographable due to its faintness.)

The Selmer HS* is a fairly close lay mouthpiece, the HS** much more open.
Both models have been in production for very many years.
From your description of the oval table stamp I would think that the mouthpiece must be at least 50 years old, possibly somewhat more.

I got ahold of one of those. The greenish color just means it was exposed to sunlight or washed in hot water. I sent mine to Vytas Krass who refaced it. When I got it back my teacher asked to borrow it and I haven't seen it since!
