 Recommendation for 2nd Clarinet
Author: Chris
Date:   1999-04-10 13:22

My Daughter is in 7th Grade and currently plays a Buffett
R-13 Bb Clarinet (I know I have probably spoiled my child:))
Anyway, the R-13 is her only clarinet and I have come to the realization she needs a second instrument to use when conditions are a little too rough for the R-13 (Camp, Vacations, High School Marching Band). I am willing to spend a little more (~$400)than I have seen advertised for most of the used student models I've seen advertised and wanted advice on what the best choice would be.

You can get a new plastic horn such as the Leblanc Vito or Buffet B-12 for that from the major mail order houses such as Woodwind & Brasswind or International Music. You can find phone numbers etc by picking resources on the menu at the bottom of the bulletin board and then picking retail.

I would agree with Dee. although I would be inclined to find a used intrument if possible. Your daughter could try to pick one out that plays most similar to her R-13 (would would think it would be a B-12, but this may not be true).

I got a used R-13 for my son when he was near the end of 6th grade and had taken lessons for two years.

I bought a used Evette at an Albuquerque pawn shop during a business trip for $125 last year. It needed very little adjustment to be playable. Caveat emptor if you go pawn shop.

I've recently seen a new Buffet B-10 Phenoresin clarinet on e-bay. The ad says it has undercut tone holes, stainless steel rods, plastic case, adjustable thumb rest. The plastic clarinet is much more suitable to inclement climate (I live one mile into the fog, and it works horrors on my wood clarinet to drive out of it). The person selling that horn apparently has more than one, and (s)he's at (617)734-9300, and (s)he says the B-10 lists at $580. I don't know whether the B-10 handles anything like the B-13, but it might be a close plastic match for your daughter's present clarinet.

I have to question the fact that your child may not want to pursue clarinet after high scool, and therefore also question if this was a truly wise investment. No offense, my parents went through this same issue when purchasing an R-13.
