I have a "C" clarinet that my great grandfather played. My son wants to learn to play it now. I need to have it refurbished.. I can't find a serial number or a manufacturers name. Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance! Mary

If there were a serial number on it, it would be embossed in the wood somewhere. The normal places are on the backs of the two large sections at either the top or bottom of the piece. You may need a very strong light to find it if it is there as on older horns, it may be nearly worn away. Some instruments have it on both pieces and some on only one piece. If it is not embossed in the instrument, then there is no way to find out what it was.
By the way, are there any other markings on it? Do you know the brand? Is it the standard Boehm system used today (quick check is four levers for the right hand pinky finger to operate)? How do you know it is a "C" clarinet? This is somewhat uncommon. Have you checked it against a tuner? If it was played by your greatgrandfather, are you sure it is in modern pitch? It could be old enough that it was built to a different standard.
