Hello, friends!
For music history, we have the option of an extra credit performance or paper on music from the eras we have studied this term. This term's focus was classical up to present, so I have plenty to choose from for clarinet music, but I really want to do something modern-ish, perhaps even something dixie or jazz that is still considered "art music." Does such a piece exist? I don't know many extended techniques, but I still want to play a piece that is really fun, exciting, and most importantly different.
Any ideas?

Sauvage is both avant garde & off the beaten path - imagine a clarinet score by Miles Davis. The score can be borrowed from the ICA library if you're an ICA member.

I STILL LOVE "RHAPSODY IN BLUE" it may be one of the finest piece for the clarinet.

But - it's not much music. Just a few solos. Can't make a recital piece for clarinet out of it.

There a fairly difficult piece for solo clarinet by Meyer Kupferman. It is titled "Moonflowers, Baby!: a jazz essay." Among pieces for solo clarinet, I would rank this one in the top 7 or so. There's only one recording of this work that I've been able to find. It is by Jonathan Cohler, and he admittedly takes the piece faster than indicated.

Libby Larson's Dancing Solo was performed at the 2000 Clarinet Fest. It is a unaccompanied piece that is definately contemporary, but with jazz idioms.

Don Banks Prologue Night Piece and Blues for Two. Aussie Music. The Blues for two makes an effective piece. Published by Schott.

Morton Gould's "Benny's Gig" is 8 short duos for Bb and Double Bass. They're deceptively difficult hot little swingers/toe-tappers, light and entertaining. Written for Benny Goodman as a personal 70th Birthday gift they were presented to him on 30 May 1979. Morton Gould was a champion and vital advocate of modern American music, he's a 1995 Pulitzer Prize and 1986 Grammy Winner as well as ASCAP President for 8 years.
