I just have to say that I got to toot on a contrabass clarinet a little tonight at my lesson and wow! You guys and girls that play them regularly must have some set of lungs on you. That beast was 6 ft. tall. I had to stand to play it or maybe rather honk or squaak on it. Fun though.

Pam -

Contras are great. I have a Leblanc BBb extending down to low C that can shake the walls, and I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of a Selmer Eb that's being refurbished.

There have been a lot of posts on contras over the years. Search on "contrabass" and "contra-alto" to find them.

You have to use pretty soft reeds -- just hard enough to avoid a "flapping" sound on the low notes. When you do, you can play with (relatively) little air and also play softly.

Best regards.

I'm a new owner (three weeks) of a Buescher (aka Bundy) EEb contra-alto clarinet, and I'm having a ball playing it. This weekend I had the opportunity to take home and noodle around on a Noblet bass sax, and I was surprised to find that, because of the really close Vandoren mouthpiece that came with the bass sax, it had very little power or depth in the lower register. I was able to blow it out of the water with the low notes on the contra clarinet.

Dave, you should send them back the bass sax along with a "reface job" on their mouthpiece. I'm suprised your fingers didn't itch.

Bob,
You know me all too well. I've already emailed the owner of the bass sax asking him if I could reface the mouthpiece. I hate being so predictable!

I saw a bass sax played once by someone in the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Pretty Cool. It must have cost a mint too for an instrument he only played twice the whole evening.
