Awhile back I made some postings relating to getting a new mouthpiece to fit my trusty old Kohlert Bb (I have managed to pin its date of manufacturer to somewhere in the 1920s). I decided that it was worth keeping the horn usable as a back-up horn and, with encouragement from this BB, found a repairman competent to bore out the mouthpiece socket (it needed an additional 0.2 mm in diameter to use currently available mouthpieces). With the mouthpieces I was using on it from 35 years ago it sounded alright, but when I was finally able to try my current mouthpiece it suddenly became spectacular. I guess we have made some progress in mouthpiece design afterall.
Curiously, although the mouthpiece socket was smaller, the tenon on the top of the upper joint turns out to be the same size as current models. While I was in the shop I decided to try some newer barrels. I was somewhat surprised to find that the best sound came from the barrel I had just had modified. Guess I'll have to find something else to spend my money on.
