Time to Replace my CS Custom

Hi All,

Well, almost 7 years have passed since I began playing my Yamaha CS Custom clarinet and this thread was active. My clarinet is still a marvelous instrument but I think I am ready for a new one since I have a big birthday coming (all of them are big at my age...).

Here is the old thread http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=251128&t=251128

Specifically, there are a couple of notes that I am just not happy with even after my very skilled tech has worked with pad height. I can't see spending a lot more money to fix something that 99.9% of the time is not a real problem. But the intonation on the instrument is outstanding from top to bottom. Better to pass this instrument to another person and use the money toward a new clarinet.

I think the Yamaha CSV Custom is my starting place; I'm a jazz, pit, wind ensemble player. Is anyone playing that particular model now? All the reviews I see on it are usually 5*.

Cheers,

Hank

PS As I said earlier in the original thread, I'm a very capable player that can probably not squeeze every nuance out of a $5-6K instrument. I still have my LeBlanc L200 as a backup.

Sounds like you want the slightest excuse to get something new! I know the feeling ...

I'd suggest trying the Lyrique Libertas ... you might like that one. Will be a positive paradigm shift for you, I think ... and very affordable on the easy payment plan.

I've played most model Yamaha clarinets over the years and they are hard to beat. Not played a pro model in a long time ... I tried some intermediate models a while back and I could live with them if my current horn was not available. High praise and honors to Yamaha!

Gosh, I miss my YCL62/65 ... although they had a million miles and seemed "blown out" ...

I had an intermittent teacher around 1984/85 that was a Buffet fan and a half. His old horn was one of the best I've played ... but George just had to have something new and better and almost bought a new Selmer Recital (he said it played like a Mercedes drove). But finally settled on, I think, a Yamaha YCL72. He sounded great, as always. But you could really hear the difference between the R13 and the YCL72 ... and I think George wisely kept his Buffet as a reference ...

Keep the Yamaha and add another horn to your collection. You'll miss it someday, if you sell it.

Happy horn hunting!

Tom

I play on a set of CSVs and love them. I do a lot of theatre work and some orchestral subbing (although, I'm mostly called in to play oboe for orchestras).

The intonation is really stable and the instruments themselves are consistent. I don't think there is as much difference between horns as you get with other brands.

It took a long time, but I eventually sold my first R13 which I bought with my first teacher. It was sitting here, almost never played (maybe once a year I played it a bit to "remember"). Both my main and backup clarinet were better and I didn't need two backups. At first it wasn't easy to get over the memory of choosing it with my teacher but I realized it was better to let that go. Now the memory is nicer because a studet bought it and they use it all the time. It's not always easy but IMO it's better to let go of the mental feelings towards things that in the end only exist to allow you to do something else (music in this case).

Natai, Tom, and Ron,

I really enjoyed your comments.

Tom, I actually have several TR 147s in a closet and those are the really back, backups. They do play very well and the cost for each was so low. I am a great fan of Tom's work as well as his wonderful, whimsical persona.

Nitai, i hear ya' with the "it was sitting there" comment. I sold off my R13s a long time ago and never really looked back. A great instrument but the Yamaha's seem to have wonderful ergonomics as well as some excellent musicality.

BTW, I have a YTS 475 tenor that gives up nothing to my very fine Mark VI. The difficulty we face with getting rid of classical instruments seems to be mostly emotionally based.

My wife says "buy the new Yamaha and keep the old one" so I guess I'll do exactly as she has instructed!
