conn instruments...(bassn)

Hi,
I have heard a few diffrent things about Conn bassoons. I have talked to a few people and half of them say there good bassoons and half of them say there not. The repair man I talked to said that older Conns are good.. What age range would be a good Conn bassoon??
I also wanted to show you this photos at http://www.icbndirect.com/ebay/Bassoon.htm and tell what what you think. It has new pads and corks. How much do you think it worth?

Actually the only Conn bassoon I've ever seen and heard was owned by an older gentleman who played small ensembles with it. It was probably as old as he as it was well "weathered" and had the old Conn brass badge insert on it like my old Conn oboe. I suspect it, like my oboe, was made in Europe for Conn. My oboe, for instance has numbers of the old European type on it with American style numbers added. I found a French oboe (Farney, I beleive) from the early thirties that matched mine exactly, including the case. The Conn bassoons may have been built in Germany as the German sound bassoons are preferred here over the French type.

Looks nice, but looks aren't everything. Bassoons vary even more than clarinets -- a lot more -- and the price of even a student instrument worth having is well over $1000. You should never buy one without trying it first.
