So my mom has decided to buy me a new clarinet for christmas since my current one is wearing out. ive been searching along side with my private teacher and the ones that have interested me is the Buffet R13, ycl-csg, ycl-csgh, and the ycl-650. Im looking for professional clarinet to buy for college and any other suggests would help tremendously. i currently play on a ycl-250 with a vandoren m30 mouthpiece and a rovner ligature.

I use to recommend the CSG-H (or SEV) unequivocally due to unquestioned dollar value as well as great constancy of pitch throughout horn from one horn to the other. Now a days I think the prices have gone up quite a bit, but it still has a the edge in how consistent the horns are made. If you have the time and energy (and selection from which to chose) finding a good R13 is also a good choice (this may sound heretical, but I think the Greenlines are better on this score since the dimensions of the bore and tone holes DO NOT change from the time of manufacture).

In this price range, the Buffet R-13, the Yamaha CSG, and the relatively new Backun Protege (offered in a choice of cocobolo and grenadilla woods) are all good potential buys. The Yamaha and the Backun will probably play better right out the box and require less tweaking. These three instruments vary appreciably in tone color, response, and the kinds of mouthpiece and reed combinations that will work best. Try as many of each kind as you can before buying.

A Buffet R13 that has been professional setup is a great option. Buffet enjoys a large majority of the professional clarinet market. And I think is because it is one of the more versatile instruments.

That mouthpiece should be a good one. Vandoren, if you find one, can be the best thing out there. Maybe look to try different mouthpieces after you find a clarinet. Don't switch at the same time.

Best of luck finding a good clarinet.
