 Clarinet unidentifiable?
Author: Kyleteresa

Hello all! I am new to the boards; have been a lurker for some time!

I received a clarinet from a friend, for my son. I have been looking for information on the clarinet so that I could get some information on parts or just on the clarinet itself.

It is a regular Bb clarinet, wood, and it says "P. Delmar Paris" on it. In small letters at the top of the upper keys it says "made in France". There is a serial number on both the upper and lower joints, they do match, and it is 6901B.

Can anyone tell me anything about the clarinet? It appears to be in excellent shape other than pad and corks, which I am working on!

Thanks in advance!

Don't know about Delmar, but could it be Dolmen? I've seen a couple so labelled and they were quite decent instruments.

Hi Tony!

It most certainly says P. Delmar; on the barrel, the bell, and the top of the top joint.

The lady who sent it to me said that it was her grandfathers(she is in her 40's) and she didn't know anything about it. It has a few things to it that make it appear that it could be a Malerne stencil? It has a small barrel trill key guide, also it is a non adjusting screw model with a shared post. It also has that "merlerne like" style bend on the top key of the lower joint ring keys, where the top pad cup bends upwards.

I will have to take a few pictures and post them? Maybe that would help?

Thanks for your reply!
Kyle

Hi Kyle,
When i wrote Dolmen I actually meant Dolnet, and like yours I think they were Malerne stencils..

I will keep looking though!

look for key similarities, use of the same fonts/location of brand name and serial/batch #, cut outs, etc. This usually helps to identify stencils.

Most french stencils were made by big producers (Malerne, thibouville, Couesnon) for music store brands

However, if this is a small independent mfg, it is likely keys were bought from someone else.. so keys by themselves are not good identifier.

I'm not sure who made the instrument in question (Malerne seems like a good guess), but I did want to clarify that Dolnet clarinets are not stencils. Dolnet was an actual clarinet manufacturer! And the instruments they made are quite nice!

Thanks for that. The couple I've come across were well made and played very well indeed.
