<b>Kruspe, C.</b> WWI, BI, <i>fl</i> Mühlhausen in Thüringen 1829-1836, <i>fl</i> Erfurt 1836-<i>p</i>1930.
Workshop established by (1) Franz Carl Kruspe (<i>b</i> Mühlhausen 1808; <i>d</i> Erfurt 1885), who trained with STREITWOLFE, 1829 established in Mühlhausen in Thüringen; 1836 moved to Erfurt; appointment as Court maker to Fürst GÜNTHER of Sondershausen; of his two sons, the elder was to specialize in BIs, the younger in WWIs; 1861 his second son (2) Friedrich Wilhelm (<i>b</i> Erfurt 26 September 1838; <i>d ibid</i> 25 October 1911)successor. He trained with his father; 1855-61 as journeyman: 1855 to F. HELL, Wien where he built BIs, WWIs, violin; 1856 to NECHWALSKY; 1857-58 to OTTENSTEINER, München, where he also made the acquaintance of BOEHM and the clarinettist BÄRMANN; 1860 to TRIÉBERT Paris, where he worked on double-reed instruments; 1881 awarded the Royal Prussian silver state medal; 1885 appointment as Court maker to Fürst Günther; the 'TAMME & Kruspe' model oboe reported, 1897; 1902 retired. An outstanding innovator, he devised improvements to all the WWIs: his flute, later known as the 'SCHWEDLER-Kruspe Reform flute', had re-designed bore, mouth-hole, keywork; his oboe had newly developed keywork: the 'System Kruspe clarinet' became the model most used in Germany: his reform-model bassoon, shown 1893 in Chicago, was built in three joints and had re-designed keywork (see obituary in <i>Zfl</i> 32.152). His second son (3) Eduard (<i>b</i> Erfurt 1871; <i>d ibid</i> 1911) successor; 1888 entered shop, 1902 proprietor; 1916 retired, 1919 died. Ilse (<i>b</i> 1898) and (4) W. KRUSPE successors; 1920 the firm was bought by G.H. HÜLLER, Schöneck, becoming a public company with Max Hüller as director. <i>c</i>1875/80 butterfly and 'CK' monogram adopted as trade mark; the factory set of prototype models, including alto, bass flute, baritone oboe, basset-horn, reform bassoon, is now at D-Leipzig.
