Tonight, Frank Cohen, principal with Cleveland, played a wonderful piece by Oscar Navarro, II Concerto. It's a 20ish minute piece that is really a hidden gem of the modern repertoire. While the performance was not broadcast, you can here both of his clarinet concertos on Navarro's website.

I got excited - I was thinking of Fats Navarro - a bop trumpet player who died too early.
I'm sure Oscar Navarro is just fine - just not my groove though.

I just had a chance to listen to it, and I really enjoyed it. Frank Cohen's playing was outstanding.
This is an enjoyable composition that seems to have immediate audience appeal. It will be interesting to see if it becomes a part of the regular clarinet repertoire.
In a very strange sort of way, it reminded me of Larry Ashmore's Four Seasons for Clarinet and String Orchestra. Although Ashmore's music doesn't sound like Navarro's, both composers have written plenty of music for films. Both solo works--unlike so many modern concertos--have plenty of good melodies.
