My teacher Michael Campbell, solo bass clarinettist of HK Phil, has retired on 6th of July, though he continues teaching me and other students. But according to my other [adult]friends in HK Phil, the seat of the bass clarinettist is not filled by anyone yet.
Another talented bass clarinettist in HK Phil is John Schertle, who is getting his new Selmer Privilege after years playing with his Selmer 35. However, he is also the solo Eb clarinettist. And this could to be a problem when performing Stravinsky and Mahler, as there is not enough performers for both instruments.

I've always loved the term "solo" bass clarinetist. Everytime the bass clarinet has an exposed note it is a solo instrument. Orchestra's only have one bass clarinet player so they'rew all "solo". I've never refered to my self as the "solo" bass clarinetist, only the bass clarinetist. I am after all, the only one. The HK Phil will have to find a permant replacement or regular sub unless they intend to only play Mozart, Beethoven and Brahm because at least a half of the standard repertiore after Brahms uses the bass clarinet. I've never heard of a principal player also being the bass clarinet player. Good trick and good luck.

Hi Ed,
As a fellow bass clarinettist I'm really happy to see you often respnding to my posts.
John Schertle in HK Phil also plays the bass well, but he is also the Eb player. So among Mahler's symphonies only the 5th doesn't need an Eb, the only thing they can play currently. Also some Wagner excerpts could be possible. Almost every R. Strauss and Stravinsky pieces needs the bass and Eb simultaneously, as well as the Mahler Symphonies I've mentioned above.

Mahler 5 does have an E-flat (D) part. It's in the 3rd part along with Bass, B-flat, A and C.
