 K&M 4-peg base - need a screw
Author: gsurosey

I have the K&M base that holds 4 instrument pegs, and I'm very happy with it. However, the screw that goes in the center of the base is stripped from overuse. For now, copious amount of duct tape keep it from moving somewhat, but it's still loose and a little tippy (I'm doing a musical this summer, so I need my instrument stand to be steady).

Any ideas on where I can get just that screw? If I walk into a hardware store, can someone match it for me? In an attempt to make it work, someone with a tap and dye set tried to re-thread it for me, so it's not the same size it was. The hole that the screw fits into in the stand is square (the head of the screw is round on top and square on the bottom).

You probably won't find the exact spare part, but this is something that could be fixed by any handyman with some tools and a junkbox. Do you know anybody who fits this description? If we weren't half a world apart I'd fix it for you myself in about 10 minutes.

If you have a good hardware store nearby, especially a mom and pop store that's been around for a long time, they should be able to fix you up. Take the whole stand along with the bolt and (wing?) nut. Even if they don't have the exact part, they will probably have something that works.

Best regards,

have the same stand.... it uses a (modified) carriage bolt and wing-nut.

As long as the die your friend ran the bolt through was a standard size (and did not destroy the threads), it would be quite easy to find a new matching wing-nut at any small hardware store.

If that is not feasible you'll need to simply buy a new carriage bolt, file the upper portion square, likely shorten the bolt, and buy a matching wing-nut.

My oboe/cor/clarinet double stand (converted to a triple stand) also went through several central screws. I went to the local tool shop and bought much larger short coach bolts and wing nuts which are much better.

The thread/screw size K&M use on these isn't really ideal, so you will be much better off fitting a beefier screw to it (I went with M6 bolts/wing nuts). That will involve drilling out the existing hole through the middles, filing the square larger and shortening the new screw so it doesn't get grounded while in use.

The opinions I express are my own.

Thanks for your suggestions, everybody.

I contacted K&M and they're going to send me a new carriage bolt (and one of the rubber feet that I lost a long time ago - I'm sure that will help things not move around as much, too). When I noticed that it had come off, I tried to take the other 3 off so I could glue them on; of course, they won't budge when I want them to.

The person I talked to said it could take a while, but that's ok. The stand in it's current condition will do. For the musical, I may order a piccolo peg for my Hercules sax stand and put my flute and piccolo on my sax stand and use an individual stand I have for my clarinet (probably the safest option).
