Hello all! I'm in the market for a new barrel, and I wanted some opinions. The barrels I'm thinking about are Wesley Rice, Clark Fobes, and Allan Segal. If you guys have any experiences with these barrels, or another one that you would like to recommend, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

If you can, try them before you buy. They are all good barrels, but you will need to see if they work for your setup. I just got a Backun barrel, and I really like it.

I'm an absolute fan of Allan Segal. I've recently bought two barrels from him and they are the prize pieces of my considerable collection. There is the beauty of the object itself, the acoustic qualities and also the fact that he really tailors his barrels to your clarinet and mouthpiece combination. I defy anybody to do better!

All are good choices. The only way to know is to try and see what you prefer and what works best for you with your your mouthpiece on your instrument. It can be very personal. Allan Segal's barrels are made custom to your needs, so you can work with him to get exactly what you are looking for.

It's really important when you talk about changing anything in your setup to have some clear idea of what you're trying to accomplish. What are you using now and what do you want a new barrel to improve?
FWIW, I think very highly of both Clark Fobes's and Allan Segal's barrels. I'm sure Wesley Rice's barrels are excellent, too, but I have no experience with them at all.

Try before you buy is the best advice, as well as setting your expectations. I had to try several Backun Barrels and Bells to ensure not only the tone I wanted but also that they fit properly and were finished to my expectations. If you go with Allan's barrels, he requests that you contact him before placing the order...although I've not had the privilege of trying one of his barrels.

I use one of Dr. Segal's barrels. As do several of my students. Great barrels.

I use the Segal barrel on my Selmer and Backun bells and barrels on my Buffets, it just depends on your mouthpiece and your clarinet. Seems everyone is making a barrel these days. Just make sure you can return it if it doesn't fit you, every barrel plays differently on every clarinet for every player. Like snow flakes, no two are excactly alike.

I needed a different size barrel on short notice. I bought a Wesley Rice primarily because he services my clarinet and I was right there in the shop to try several out. I am happy with the barrel, but haven't compared it to the others you mention.

Thank you all for you input. I'll be sure to try out the barrels before I buy any! And my current setup is a Buffet R13, with Gonzalez reeds size 3.25, Rico Reserve Classic size 3.5, and I'm currently experimenting with some mouthpieces as well ( I've found that the mouthpiece that actually came with my instrument is one of the best ones I own! A lot better than most Vandorens I've tried). Not sure if this helps or not, but none the less thanks again!
