The American composer, who lived in Europe where he came as a Fulbright scholar in the early 50s, has died at age 83. He composed much for the clarinet: a sonata, a "partita" for clarinet and piano, duets for two clarinets, a duet for clarinet and bassoon, a piece for two clarinets and two bassoons, a piece for two clarinets, a trio for viola-clar and piano and more. Sherwood was a nomad who earned a living by begging in the streets of Paris and composing in public parks, cafés and fleabag hotels. It is a wonder he was able to be so productive his whole life long and compose such high quality works. I wa fortunate enough to know him and play many of his works, just about all of which are unpublished. I composed a "Bitter Suite" (Editions Fértile Plaine") for solo clarinet dedicated to him.
A rather tragic life, but to some extent, a life of his choosing.
