Thanks for helping me to find this fun piece of music! I am looking forward to performing it this summer in our local city band!
I have one huge question, however. At rehearsal #3, there is a G trill with melody notes written under it. There is a direction to "play the melody line while continuing to trill." It says that "this is accomplished by fingering the melody in rhythm, but adjusting the length of each tone to the speed of the trill."
What are they talking about?? Do I just trill each note, or do I trill the third finger on the right hand while fingering the other notes? (this does not work on my instrument)
Help! I'm feeling pretty ignorant for a person with a music degree! I have always stuck to the 'literature', so fun music is new to me. I didn't know what I was missing!

My clarinet teacher and I came up with trilling the G, but playing each written note in rhythm, but always returning to the G trill. REALLY hard to write and understand- Basically, when I did it, the melody notes were REALLY short, with the G trill in between each melody note, but the notes were still played in rhythm.
Anyone have a better way to describe it?

I kept trilling the G while playing the other notes- some would come out. For the notes that wouldn't work, I just trilled on that note and forgot about the G. Basically, find a way to trill the theme that sounds cool. It's not authentic Mozart. I played this piece at a high school talent show and it was a big hit.

Hi, Karen -
I too have played this piece with our local community band. It was great fun. I even went so far as to run out to the audience and hand someone the piece of the clarinet I had just removed. Usually a young person or senior citizen - whoever was sitting in the front row. It always got a laugh.
The trill section you are referring is definately the most challenging part of the piece. The G gets trilled while the other notes are played in time. The trick is to time the trill so that you are on the G when you go down to play the melody notes. It takes practice, but eventually it makes sense. I often got applause from the audience while playing this obviously difficult passage.
The section of the piece that is played with only the upper joint is not technically that difficult, but I felt that I could not play it as written, because some of the notes were horrendously out of tune. You can compensate for some of that by putting a finger over the about half of the bore at the bottom of the upper joint, but I also found that I needed to create some new fingerings for the out of tune notes.
The last few notes of the piece, played with just the mouthpiece was also way out of tune for me, but by that time, I think the audience was in on the joke and really didn't care.

My clarinet teacher and I figured out the reason for the horrendously out of tune last note- Mouthpieces were made sharper back when the piece was written so it was in tune. Now the mouthpieces are made flatter, so it sounds flat. I simply played that last note on a seperate (much older) mouthpiece I hid in my pocket... worked well!

I played this for my talent piece in HS for the "Queen Pageant". I couldn't quite play it memorized, so I had the tough parts photocopied and taped into the top of my case. As each piece came off, it went into the case. After the mouthpiece-only bit, I shut the case and walked offstage.
I remember the G trill as being a rhythmic challenge, but once it came together it was very cool.
I should get a new copy of that music. I can't find it in my collection and it's been 15 years since I played it.

I haven't played it but just happened to find it at the local music store last week. I couldn't pass up buying it for only $1.50. What a fun piece! I look forward to learning it with help from this bulletin board.
