Two Questions
I'm looking for a good recording of Olivier Messiaen's “Quartet for the End of Time”. I’ve heard that the Tashi recording with Richard Stoltzman is excellent, but I’m not a big fan Stoltzman’s style. Any Suggestions?
Also, can anyone take a stab at the proper pronunciation of “Messiaen”.
Thanks

Hi Mike,
I have a good recording. The Clarinet player is Guy Deplus. The Label is Erato, the No is 4509-91708-2. If you don't like Stolzman's style you may like this guy...very clean and accurate.
Michael Collins has done a recording of this work. I haven't heard it so I can't recommend it but he is a fine player.

I agree with Chris about the Deplus version, which is now out in a budget edition.
Pronunciation. Mess-ee-on. The stress is on the "on" part, which is nasal -- at least in Paris.

I recently bought a new recording of this piece with Paul Meyer and Gil Shaham. It is under the Deutsche Grammaphone label and is excellent. The number is 289 469 052-2.

Thanks everyone. I picked up the Paul Meyer / Gil Shaham CD last night. It is excellent!
This work can really fall apart depending on how it's played. They keep it very interesting throughout.
