I sent in a letter of my intent to retire at the end of this season this week after only a mere 50 years in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. I've been very lucky to have lived my musicial dream, I'm done everything I've wanted to do. Halifax NS. Symphony, 2nd clarinet one year, Baltimore Symphony, bass and clarinet 50 years, Kinhaven Music Festival One summer, Eastern Music Festival and Philharmonic, principal clarinet 25 summers, Towson University 33 years, Peabody Conservatory 19 years. I'ma very lucky person. At the end of September I will be totally retired, and looking forward to it though I will still post on this board and try to help those that pose questions when I can.

Ed, you are much to be admired (and, perhaps, envied) for reaching and living your dream. I have always admired and respected your opinions posted on this board, and I hope to go on reading them for many years to come.

Ed, congratulations on 50 years with the same orchestra! That's impressive (and so are you, and so's the orchestra). I hope you enjoy retirement as much as my husband does -- although he's learned that retiring from his "real" job and letting a hobby metastasize into self-employment means he's got a tyrant for a boss! Don't be surprised if you're busier after you "retire" than you are now.

I wrote about this a couple years ago, but it's worth mentioning again. I used to enjoy your articles in the now-defunct Woodwind World-Brass and Percussion magazine. As a college student in the 70s, and later as a young public school music educator, I'd read every issue from cover to cover.
Thanks for all your helpful advice on this board, along with the great articles in

Congratulations! I just want to add my thanks to those on the board for your helping me when I was first starting out on my clarinet journey. I posted some probably daft question here and was astonished to find such a generous and helpful answer from such a distinguished person as yourself! I have told this story to many people since. Many, many thanks and good wishes for your retirement - though I know you won't be able to resist picking that clarinet up!

I just wanted to thank all of you for your nice compliments and comments. I'm just getting over eye surgery, detached retina in on eye and some cracks in the other, so I'm just getting back to reading and answering you all. I've been in recovery for 3 weeks now and can function fine now with fairly good vision in one eye. The retina eye will take more time. I'm planing on returning to the BSO the week after next for Schosakovitch 11th symphony. I'm just now beginning to read music but it's still very cloudy and not always clear so I need to giive it one more week.
As far as a vacancy in the BSO, don't get to excited. We have over a dozen openings due to budget problems and our second players, Bill Jenken is a very good bass clarinet player. He is subing for me while I'm out now and I'm assuming he will take over my position. They will probably hire a part time second when he is not available to play that position as they have been doing in all the other sections. The clarinet section is the only one that still has four full time players but that will change at the end of September. So it's anyones guess what will happen as far as hiring someone full time in the clarinet section in the future. In the mean while, I still have the rest of this season. I will probably still keep playing when something local comes along and will continue to teach when getting a request for lessons. I'm looking forward to having lots of time to travel, garden, spend time with my two new grandchildren and of course do facefook and the Clarinet board. Thanks again.
