 best tuner/metronome app
Author: clarinet2656

I have an iPad mini and it is my first Apple product. What is the best chromatic tuner and/or metronome app that is in the app store that you currently are using? If it's a great free app more the better, but if it costs a little bit and is worth the money, I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks,
s

I use Cleartune chromatic tuner and Tempo by Frozen Ape. I think combined they cost $5, and I've never come close to using all the options they have.

I believe you'll find many enthusiastic supporters of many different products.

On my Itouch I use Epic Tuner and Steinway metronome. Both free; both fine.
Are they the best? I don't know.

I agree with tempo for a metronome. You can set the time signature and then get a different sound for the downbeat than the rest of the measure. For a tuner, I have used "tuner-nome" and it seems fine. To be honest though, after the initial novelty of owning my first Iphone wore off, I reverted to using a dedicated metronome at home and a dedicated tuner at rehearsal. They were much more convenient. The app is more of a backup in case of forgetting my Korg since my phone is always with me. Given that a tablet is bigger, it might be even less convenient. Enjoy that tablet though. I'm hoping to get one for myself. Then I can surf this BB from my couch!

I have Cleartune and Pro Metronome on my phone. Can be handy to pull out in rehearsals, but for practice I use the old standard metronome and tuner because using the apps on my phone zaps the battery. A little Korg tuner/metronome runs for months on two AAs.

If you really want to have some fun, put a SPL meter app on your phone. I got Decibel 10th -- find out just how damaging it is where you sit. : P

I usually use an old Seth Thomas mechanical metronome, but the newfangled ones have got their uses, I must admit.

At the International Saxophone Symposium on January 5, Steve Wilson gave a combination jazz recital and lecture in which he asked the audience how many of us sometimes practiced with a metronome. A minority raised hands. He asked those of us who'd raised our hands whether, in 4/4, we set the metronome to beat the one and the three or the two and the four. The majority set the offbeats, two and four. I wouldn't need all my fingers to count those of us who set the one and the three. He asked us why we did that. The guy he called on said, "So I know where the one is!" A lot of people laughed -- while I impulsively punched my thumbs up and yelled, "Yes!" Right answer. You need to know where's "on" in order to know where to step off.
