Hi,
I was just wondering about (higher) music education systems in France and Germany. Is anybody familiar with them? Are there any websites where I can find out more?
Many thanks!

Hi,
Here is the way the music education system works in France.
There are 2 national conservatory which are the most prestigious schools in France. One in Paris and one in Lyon.
They are called Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse (CNSMD).
Admission is pretty tough, but if you are very talented and still young (they have age limits depending on the instrument you play) you can try to get in.
The next level are regional conservatory called
Conservatoire National de Region. There is pretty much one in every region. The one that I know of which have a good reputation for clarinet are Strasbourg, Boulogne-Billancourt (close to Paris), and Besancon. There are many others (20~50) I just don't know all of them.
There are then many other school some approved by the French ministry of culture some not. I would stay away from anything below the Conservatoire National de Region if you're really serious about musique.
Good luck in your studies!

I don't think the place you go to is really important.
The important thing is with who you work.
The best people in the world you could probably go study would be people such as Walter Boeykens in Rotterdam, Michel Arrignon in Paris, Thomas Friedli in Geneva, Michael Collins in London / John Davies (ahh.. not him anymore, he's pentionned... lucky me, his last student).
Anyway... if you're lookig for a complete course on music, I would recommend Royal Academy in London. If you want to become a soloist... study as freelance with the best people in the world, and use contests as exams.
Germany is a very good place.. but for germans... they don't like Boehm clarinets. (orchestras only accept Oehler Clarinetists).
Rendez Vous in for the next Nielsen, Geneva, and Spain music competitions.

p.s.
stay the furthest away from America, and especially Julliard.

How about music theory, harmony and history.
Don't you think it is useful for any instrumentist to know such things?
And how about playing with fellow students, in chamber music, orchestras?
Studying freelance is great if you already have a pretty strong music education.
