 Place to buy Clarinet in Washington D.C. Area

Hello Everyone,
Very soon i'm going to buy my very own clarinet. I even have to use my own money. I may be able to squeeze a hundred buck from my parents though. I am planning on buying a Buffet E-11. I want to know if ther are any places in Northern Virginia, Southern Maryland or in Washington D.C. where I can get a E11 for a good price(under $600). I prefer to try many E11 and maybe even some other clarinet makes and see whice one I like best. Your feedback is very much appreciated.

-Andy

"Washington Music" has good competitive prices in that area however their stock is up and down. Call first.

Ken is right. Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center in Weaton MD is the only place to go. We bought my wife's Haynes Flute there. Price was almost full retail---typical for a Haynes flute.

Security is tight at WMC and the facility is not the best looking, but they have the stock. They are currently renovating.

I live in Washington, DC. If I were you, I'd:

1. Surf eBay;
2. Surf eBay again in a week;
3. Go to Chuck Levin's.
-but-
4. DO avoid the other place (I'm not writing the name here for legal fear!) in downtown Silver Spring.

It's OK to mention Dale Music.

Chuck's is a bit overwhelming, especially on a Saturday when every wanna-be rock and rap drummer and guitarist descends on the place to try out equipment. But hands down, it has the best instruments prices in the area.

As an alternative, you could follow the route of many Sneezy-ites and do the mail order thing from a place like WW&BW.

If I used mail order I wouldn't know which instrument is good or not. I have never played a good clarinet before by ole Bundy Resonite. I would have a hard time telling if a instrument is good from WWandBW because I would have nothing to compare it to. But I have to say WWandBW has the lowest prices i've seen on the net. I haven't gotton a price quote from Washington Music yet. Thanks for all of your responses so far.

I'm not sure if they're still around, but there used to be Zavarella's Music in Arlington (Crystal City). Also, there's a Mars Music in Springfield, VA I think.

Re: Zav's.. Ive been going there for 32 years.. Purchased my first clarinet in '68 < a wurlitzer> and my second one <an evette-shaeffer>. His son and wife are still running the place, but they no longer carry Buffet's in stock since they cant compete with the internet sites and Chuck Levin's and Foxes. I still go there for reeds etc. out of habit. Blake

I bought a Selmer there in 1995. Bought it from Mr. Z. Sorry to hear he's not there anymore. It was a great store. He had some Selmer mpcs. He claimed were refaced by Kaspar (age-wise, they might have been). His price for the Selmer was hundreds less than other quotes.
