Would a year 2000 R13 usually have a metal ring at the trumpet end of the bell?

Unless it has been removed or the bell has been replaced with one without a bell ring (such as a Tosca, Jazz Festival, Elite or an aftermarket bell), all R13s will have a metal bell ring as standard.

Also, I wish they didn't. They almost always become loose in the dry/winter months. It's a big headache for dealers.

I prefer the Festivals. They don't need a ring on the bell. Why does the R13?

The bell ring on my R13 A clarinet has become a weapon. It took me the longest time to figure out I was cutting my thumb on the bell ring from cutting in on and taking it off. Now, no matter what time of year, there is a sharp edge on the top of the bell ring (the surface that is flush with the bottom is fine.

The wood should be oiled to keep the moisture content from changing with the seasons. The metal ring won't vary much unless you go from a sauna into a Canadian winter!

So the wood will shrink if not cared for as the cells close and shrinks...and that goes for the entire horn.

The barrel rings are intended to keep the wood from splitting. You may be able to "expand" the bell somewhat by just using bore oil...or soaking it in linseed oil (ONLY THE BELL). If you can afford a bunch of bottles of clarinet bore oil, then soak it in that. Linseed oil has a raucous smell to it. :)

With hardwoods once the wood cells seal up it's hard to get them expanded again though but it's doable with patience.

Buffet has managed to come up with a process that doesn't require a ring for their Tosca line of clarinets. Maybe some new Alien tech! ;)

If that's the case then Boosey and Hawkes have had that tech for a very loooong time... ;-)

Best way to tighten the loose bell ring is to get a large plastic bottle that has a snap open airtight lid. Tupperware makes one. And put a small plastic container filled with water such as the lid of a small can of deoderant sample spray bottles like you find in the sample department of CVS, Rite Aid, or Walgreen. This will create a humid zone. Leave it in the bottle overnight and in the morning the bell ring should be tight again. If it is extremely loose you will need to leave it in for a couple of days. I learned this from one of todays greatest clarinetists, Mr. Michael Norsworthy.

When the bell ring is loose all year, there's an expensive tool that shrinks it http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=1358&t=1296. Most large repair shops have one.

If it's slightly loose in winter, you can run superglue into the gap between the bell ring and bell rim to stop it rattling. If it's excessively loose, then it'll need shrinking or removing completely if that's what you want.

The Buffets that don't have a metal bell ring as standard are the Elite, the Jazz Festival, the Tosca, the Divine and also the E11 C and Eb clarinets, the B10 and some B12s.

If the wood shrinks in one season of the year and the bell ring gets loose and you use superglue to tighten it you will run the risk of cracking the bell when the season changes and the wood swells again.

No you won't as the wood is in compression, just like socket rings are. I've never seen or had a bell crack due to the bell ring being too tight - only encountered socket cracks from the socket rings being too loose or bells without rings cracking if dropped or put down too heavily on a stand.

Similarly if you have the bell ring shrunk, it will hold the wood in compression.

Chris,
Thanks for that information. I really appreciate it. Often times people tell us things that are not really true which leads to misinformation. Thanks again for the clarification. Once again this board is an amazing resource.Chris P wrote:

Wood is strong when held in compression - think of wooden cart wheels, beer or wine barrels that have metal hoops around them. If it wasn't for the metal hoops keeping them all tight, they'd fall apart as there's no glue used in binding them together.

Although clarinet joints are turned from a single piece of wood as opposed to being made from multiple staves or batons held or glued together, the rings serve to hold the weakest areas in compression to prevent the expansive force of a tenon cork or peg from splitting the wood.

That makes perfect sense to me now that I think about it.
