Although a different circumstance, this is similar to our government's raid on the Gibson Guitar Company. The power of the government at times is frightening. They can seize something you have and then you have to prove they are wrong !! No due process !!

According to the article, the violinist normally carries her ownership papers. I guess she'll make sure she *always* carries them after this terrible experience. The most disturbing part of the story is that the Germans still haven't given back her fiddle. What do they hope to accomplish by dragging their feet, besides getting themselves a lot of negative publicity about "typical Germans?" I hope she doesn't end up having to sue if the customs orcs damage her Guarnarius.

Could be worse. Back in 2001 pianist Krystian Zimerman travelled to New York with his personal Steinway to play a concert at Carnegie Hall. Unfortunately the customs officials at JFK Airport in New York thought that the piano "smelled funny" so they seized it and then had the bomb squad destroy it with an explosive device.

I'm shocked that the Swiss authorities could have made such a mistake. What's going on over there, Ben? I thought you had a handle on the Swiss situation (Switzuation?).
