Just bought an entirely unmarked wood clarinet.
No logo what-so-ever. Serial # appears to be E (??) 7443, but no search shows any clue as to what brand/era it may belong...
Case is hard, leather binding with metal hinges & clasps.
Only other marking is "Made in France"
Any ideas??

It's a Malerne by any other name (or none as the case may be).

Thanks for the photos, Cheshire RN, and for the ID, Chris.
This is exactly the same clarinet that I owned in high school. My parents bought it for me after we moved and I had to return the Selmer professional model loaner I had been playing to its owner.
I was not very happy with this clarinet, but that may have been because it did not compare well with the beautiful Selmer I had played earlier. It was a very generic "student clarinet".

In the UK, these Malerne clarinets were sold through Selmer London to fill a gap in the market, so there was (in no particular order) the Selmer Console, Gold Seal and Sterling with the Selmer Paris being the pro model. MArigaux took over Malerne in the early '70s.
The Howarth student model clarinet from the '80s was also made by Marigaux which was possibly one of the last stencils produced by them - the pro level Marigaux clarinets were very different beasts. The large diameter flanged base pillars that were characteristic of Malerne clarinets were also a feature used on Howarth pro level clarinets.

I've read that the "bent north" arm connecting the right hand rings to the top pad is the sign of an inferior instrument. Is this so, and is it characteristic of Malernes?
