I hear many times in recordings the first entry of the 1st clarinet playing a turn even though it's not written a turn. What is it supposed to be played as?How did ppl in Mozart's time play it? What are the exact notes? to my ear i hear:
F G F E F G A F sharp G... etc...
Is that correct? Or should it be played exactly as written?
If it's not correct why do people play what's not written?
Help would be appreciated. thanks

There is no exact way of playing this. The use of the turn is one way though I prefer to play an upper note trill on the semi quaver.

I've done it as a trill (starting on the upper note) ending with a turn. Maybe it's different with each edition (similar to where it cuts to the Coda in the Romanze movement can vary from one edition to another).

Chris,
In the autograph Mozart just writes a trill without the turn so we should really observe that. Regarding the "cut" in the autograph this looks like it was added and then later scrubbed out. I've done it both ways and prefer without the cut.
