What an extraordinary performance this was.
I felt privileged to hear such commitment. They had clearly rehearsed for hours, down to the last detail: every harmony shift was prepared -- especially in the 'cello line. The control of tempo was amazing throughout -- nothing brash, nothing played for effect.
Wagner's deep acknowledgement of Weber's mastery was vindicated. Every player took his contribution seriously. Baermann's legendary status was recreated by Martin Frost; he is an acknowledged master of his heritage, crowning and indeed surpassing the line of clarinet players who have attempted this work. His very tone invites emulation.
No note of anyone's part was skimped. It was a true reflection of Weber's genius.
Thank you, Ken, for telling me about this. Your exemplary judgement is shown once more. If it's still available, everyone should go listen.

It seems unbelievable, in fact totally incredible, that Tony was so impressed by this performance... but he was! It must have been truly impressive, no?
