Any suggestions on how to clear accumulated dirt, grease and muck from the inscriptions of clarinets? I'm tempted to use a needle to pick the stuff out but wondered what other thoughts there may be on this. Once cleaned out I will use a trademark crayon to make the inscription as good as new.

I use a soft toothbrush and dishwashing detergent to remove as much as possible, very gently and carefully, and then use a specially shaped tool made from a ground-down small screwdriver to pick and scrape out whatever is left and to freshen up the grooves. Be careful with the crayon, if you get too much on the surrounding area it gets trapped in the grain and can be hard to remove.

A needle is fine, as is a scriber or dental scraping tool provided the point is small enough to clear out all the old gold paste and accumulated dirt.
If the logo has been stamped or engraved deep enough, you'll find that will make it much easier to work with and the end result will be excellent. Buffet logos and others that are stamped lightly are far more difficult to redo.
If you do get any gold paste in the surface grain surrounding the logo (or in scratches within it), use a sharp needle to pick it out with. A wipe over with a cloth with a couple of drops of bore oil will also remove any excess gold paste on the surface - solvents will do the same thing, but don't use solvents on plastic clarinets.
Above all, be very patient and take your time over it.

I preferred a gold paste or paint, but it requires some skill.
