 Barrels???
Author: allynalyssa

I've been playing for about 6 years, I play on a Buffet E11 and I just switched to a Vandoren M15 mouthpiece from the 13 and the new Vandoren M/0 ligature. I like the crisp-ness from the M15 mouthpiece but I miss the dark and warmer tone from the M13 so I was thinking about possibly looking into buying a new barrel. I was wondering if anyone had any reasonably priced suggestions, thanks!

Watch out. I don't think most of the normal third party barrels will work on an E11. If you want to try barrels, check with Allen Segal or Clark Fobes for barrels that will match the E11 bore and normal E11 barrel length. I seem to remember that E11's have much shorter barrels than R13 type clarinets.

Thanks, Walter. I will be happy to advise the OP, as would Clark Fobes.
In all honesty, the root cause of the sonority dilemna may be multifactoral.

I wager that this is more of a situation with the mouthpiece, not barrel. The m15 has a very unique sound and just doesnt sound like an m13. It's different, but i think you're gonna have a tough time making an m15 sound like an m13.

Fwiw, i find the same thing. The m13 has a different sound, but doesnt respond for me as well as the m15. I chose to keep the m15 and respect and learn to love the new sound i have. It's not a bad sound, just different.

I have an M15 mouthpiece and i too was/am looking for a darker sound, i play on a Benten clarinet, not many people have heard of it its a clarinet made by a small company in Hawaii and play as good if not better than the Buffet Premier... But i tried a backun barrel from a friend and it gave me a much darker and fuller sound but the problem was the barrel's diamiter was about a millimeter too big so when i tried to move aroubd it would shake, surprisingly it didnt affect my sound that much.
But the point is i recomend trying a Fat Boy barrel that backun makes and i know they make them in different sizes.

-Best of luck
