 More reed sandpaper

Considering the number of replies to Amanda Rose's post earlier, this is a popular subject, so here's my experience in the field - -

Today I tried for the first time ever (OK, I've only played for about four months) to do some work on my reeds; I had two V12s, #3, one was great, the other absolutely not, so I thought: what the heck, let's see if we could do something. It felt a bit too hard, so I sanded it lightly on the back (flat) side, a few strokes - and whoa! it was transformed to the best reed I've ever tried in my whole, four-months clarineting career. Suddenly, the other sounded kind of poor in comparison, so it was given the magic strokes too (fewer, it had an OK strength from the beginning), and behold: yet another great reed.

So, what kind of magic tool did I use? Well, when I bought my turntable (y'know, for those larger-than-a-dinner-plate, black vinyl things with music on both sides), I got some small pieces of plastic, a little bit grainy on one side. These were, according to the company (scottish hi-fi manufacturer Linn), the best tool for cleaning the pick-up. I almost never use them for their intended purpose, all that is on the pick-up is a bit of dust that could easily be blown away by a clarinetist with decent air support, but they were an obvious choice, when I was looking for something to work my reeds with. What's on them, what do they do (align warped surface? Making rough surface smoother?) - - - I have absolutely no idea - - they simply make the reeds better for me - and I guess that's what counts.

Hmm...

Any discarded reeds would make great shims under the plinth. If you're running the Valhalla or Sondeck LP12, the spent reeds could be modified to augment the suspension.

Cane has excellent dampening qualities in the nominal oscillation mode of the suspension and would filter RFI!

OR

Good to know some of the audiophile community has found a way to recycle the esoterica.

I missed my Vinyl until I helped a friend move his collection. My back was out for nearly a week.
