Supplementary material for soprano and bass clarinet

My daughter plays soprano and bass clarinet, progressed through the Pearson Standard of Excellence books and is starting in on the Rubank Advanced Method in school. I'm looking for supplementary material to study over the summer on both soprano and bass. She’s has an interest in jazz, Dixieland jazz, and orchestral music. She is not taking private lessons at this time. What would be some decent material to pick up for her? I’m thinking of Drapkin’s Symphonic Repertoire for the Bass Clarinet but would like suggestions on other material.

When I was at that level I just started buying books of music. I bought some movie/ pop music books. Just go to the local music store and have her thumb through some of the music there, if she finds something she likes and that she can play a song or two of I'd say that they are good investments. They have all sorts of stuff (star wars, harry potter, and lord of the rings were all quite good- also had one titled Dixieland Jazz that is worth it). You can also get trumpet, tenor sax, or any instrument in Bb as substitutes (as they are in the same key and the range of the clarinet is the largest). Also, there are some good duet books (Rubank ext.) that were always fun (especially to play with the teacher). Many of these books come with play along CD's. Oh, and if she wants to play jazz than a Fake/ Real Book in Bb would be good (there are usually some easy charts in there).

The Drapkin books will be of little use at the moment. Many of the excerpts will be too difficult, or won't sound much like music, or will be A transposition in bass clef, stuff like that. I agree with the suggestion to buy more general books. I remember the Rubank Advanced Method from my own days in school. Perhaps some etude books would be good. There are literally dozens. For students not quite up to Rose I like Gambaro. The easy volumes of Kalman Oppermans's Velocity series are also nice. But the very best investment at this point would be a good teacher.

The best choice you can make for your daughter is to find her an experienced teacher, better than any number of books. ESP eddiesclarinet.com
