This is the first etude. it's not my best performance, but if you could give me hints on how to make it better I'd appreciate that.

Take twice as much breath and blow three times as hard.

Then work on it with a metronome.

Lot of good things; charging through, good rhythm, essentially good articulation.


I would kinda sort of second what Ken said. So much of a air is technique. You really need to PUSH your air out (abdomenals are not just for sit ups). One technique used by an academic was to stuff a sock up the bell of the student's horn, have her play a low E as loud as possible (no sound comes out of course), repeat the challenge twice more, then remove the sock and have the student play a loud low E. The sound she got amazed HER !!!!

That's the idea.


The use of a swift, concentrated stream of air will give you a much more robust sound that ultimately should have the instrument vibrate under your fingers (and you should really feel this).

As Ken and Paul mentioned...BREATHING.

Big gulps of it......properly to the diaphragm and then up to the lungs. (note that there is also a technique referred to as half breaths....this was used in the teaching of Stan Hasty). Seemingly, you run out of gas (air) and are pushing with your abs to expel whatever air is remaining.

Work on your tonguing. You've a good foundation but I hear it as almost slapping the reed. (first determine which part of the tongue you are using and then make whatever adjustment may be necessary to attain a clean attack).

I do not recall , nor know how to, a BB article on Tonguing by Ken Shaw.
It may be in Keepers. If you do a search there, you may find it.

If not, perhaps Ken can offer it up here.

Private Lessons are a good thing. I'd recommend actually asking a clarinet teacher who can evaluate your playing in person...

Hi Brendan,

There are several issues here that need your attention.

1. More slow practice playing very precisely while listening to what type of sound you are producing.
2. Use a metronome; your rhythm must be much more steady throughout.
3. Practice the tongue, slur, tongue, tongue pattern over and over but doing it with a scale and very slowly. Listen and make sure that you are making each note speak clearly.
4. Again, slow practice.

Slow, slow, listen, listen, listen, use good a metronome...

If you make an error when practicing slowly, go back to the beginning and do things even more slowly. Speed can come later when you have the notes as well as the clean articulation pattern under COMPLETE control.

PS I find that all too often, inexperienced players do not tongue cleanly. Things are too legato

What's your mouthpiece/reed combo? When I was younger, I would blow till I was red in the face, but my reeds were too strong for my mouthpiece, so I was fighting my setup and couldn't get the air in. Lack of support sounds like the culprit, but it can't hurt to evaluate your setup, too.

Hi,

I listend to your etude and think that you are musical and can play well.
In an audition of a young player, we want to hear how the student CAN play, and it is less important how you play NOW>

One little "hint"- ask an older student to help you choose a good reed!!

I learned a new phrase last week "engage the cage" = what Ken said.

also dont rush and do some metronome work.

your tone is a bit unfocused to my ears.. it's especially obvious in the low register. That's probably why people here have been saying things about your breathing. if i were you, i would also try to use a bit softer reed.
