Hi !
When taking a New York All State Audition, what is to be required ? Is it the typical - Scales, Sight Reading and Solo ?

yes...all the normal things. you must know all major scales, and the just will randomly pick 3 which you must play. for the solo you must select a solo from the NYSSMA manual - Level 6, and it must be preformed with a live or taped piano accomp. basically anything in the advanced clarinet repitiore will be in the NYSSMA manual, level 6...but check anyway...im doing the Mozart clarinet concerto. and the the audition will end with sight reading. have you signed up yet? the auditions begin at the end of march and continue into april...when you go will be determined by where you live.

Thanks - I am also playing the Mozart clarinet concerto. I wasn't sure if it was different, of it you needed to know how many octaves on your scales or if you needed to know minor or dimished or any of that other ' fun ' stuff. My audition is either on May 4 or May 5.. ( sure they schedule all state on the same day as SAT.. grr, oh well ) okay ! Thanks

See your band director on MONDAY. Get the details and be sure he/she signs you up before the deadline. Get the specifics on what's required of you in the level 6 catagory. Check your solo with the current NYSSMA Manual.

I am also signed up - I have a conflict with May 4. ( my HS has an annunal cabret night, and my accompianist is playing for that ) so, I am really hoping that I will get a May 5th audition.
Beth, I'm from Long Island.. you are taking 3 All State auditions ? wow. Good Luck ! I have just All State and Gemeni auditions. So, that will be interesting.

I'm also auditioning, with either the Finzi Concerto or the Stravinsky Three Pieces on clarinet and a Beethoven sonata on violin. The scales are a joke- only one octave at a very slow tempo. I got a 98 on level 5 last year and I thought the sightreading was really easy, but the All State reading is probably a lot harder. I have a photocopy of the current NYSSMA manual. If anyone has questions about what solos are on the list, e-mail me.
Auditions are at the end of May in Onondaga County. If you want to put stuff off, come to snowy Syracuse.

neato, im from long island too...and ive heard of Gemeni. being as you're trying out for that, im guessing you live in western suffolk or nassau? my friend from Dix Hills belonged to it before she moved out here to Gaum...er, Miller Place, heh.

i don't know...every year NYSSMA get earlier and ealier for our area. My first year doing NYSSMA back in '95 (5th grade, ah the memories, lol), it was June. it got progressively earlier (unfortunatly as i got to higher levels and more instruments!) late may(level 3-flute), early may(level 4), late april(level 5-flute, level 4 -sax, level 3 -flute duet), middle april(level 6-flute,level 5-sax,level 4 -clarinet!), early april(last year- All state - flute, level 5 - sax,clarinet,and oboe, level 3 flute duet), late march(this year - All State - flute,oboe,clarinet...Ensembles -Flute Septet(7)(flute 7), WWQuartet(2flute,2clarinet)(2nd clarinet),Sax Quartet(AATB)-1st Alto)
what are you doing this year for NYSSMA? what have you done in the past? just curious :]

Hi ! This year i'm just doing an All State Audition - on Clarinet.. Mozart's Concerto. Last year was my first year doing it.. I did a level 5 - got a perfect score on it. I went to a private school till 9th grade, where nysmma wasn't offered, and my freshman year i was scared to death of it. Last year.. both my private teacher and my band director cornered me and said YOU ARE DOING NYSSMA ! hehe, Oh well. No regrets.I also play Flute and Saxophone as yourself.. but I like to keep thoes as ' fun ' instrumetns.. i play flute and picc for relazation and sax for jazz, so it's all good.
