Multiple-tonguing and circular-breathing at the same time
Author: Liam Murphy
Date:   2012-03-16 08:50

BBoard,

Can anyone here do this on clarinet?

Has anyone witnessed (with their eyes and ears) a clarinetist doing this?

Thanks,

Liam

P.S. For clarity, I'm talking about the traditional "ta-(ta)-ka" variety of multiple-tonguing.

Absolutely.......saw it done. Charles Neidich has been doing this for YEARS. This sort of technique is becoming the staple amongst competitive clarinet players.

Of course you don't really need it for the Mozart.

Robert Spring has also been doing it for years. Listen to any of his CDs.

I don't think it's actually possible to double-tongue while circular breathing? Try breathing in while saying "Ka"...

I've seen and heard Robert Spring circular breathe as he multiple-tongued in a live concert. No question it's do-able. He's brilliant at it. But that doesn't mean I can learn it. (I learned to multiple-tongue as a teenager, but learning circular breathing as an adult has defeated me.)

Just tried it and it is possible! The part of the tongue which says "K" is further forward and still movable than the part that closes of the throat when you breathe in through the nose. If I work on it for the next 10years I might be able to do it half as well as Bob Spring!
