 Albert system
Author: Candace Brown

A high school student of mine inherited an old clarinet, smaller than a Bb. I don't have a lot of specifics yet. Does anyone have a fingering chart and information for the Albert system or other old French system?

The Rubank Elementary method has a fingering chart that has Boehm system on one side and Albert on the reverse side. I've never played (nor taught) Albert system but I know there are quite a few fingerings that would seem strange to a veteran boehm player.

You're right, Kevin - the Albert system does seem strange (at first) to a Boehm system player. Fingering charts are a good start, I'd forgotten which method book has that. The Albert system sounds chromatically higher/lower notes by opening/closing (chromatically(?) the next tone hole(s). So, the F's and F#'s seem awkward at first to a Boehm player in that respect. That may take a little time getting used to if you're switching; otherwise they're about the same. I've played the Albert many, many years - off and on - and am by no means an 'expert' on the subject. I know there are pros and cons for both systems. To me the Albert seems like a logical way to do things. Of course the Abert doesn't have all the alternate fingering choices the Boehm offers so some 'cross fingering'(whatever that is, it's very limited - the F's, I guess) is said to be helpful.
If Candace's student's horn is smaller than a Bb it's possibly a C pitched instrument (or an Eb?). Then whether it's an HP or an LP is a whole different subject. Either way it's a lot of fun!
