I am looking at new mouthpieces. I currently use a Vandoren B 45 for the Bb clarinet. I need a darker sound though because I have to use 2 and half reeds when my Band Director and Prvt teacher say that I need a mouthpiece with a more closed lay so I get a darker tone. Right now I have a good Jazz/Dixie tone but thats not what I want for band. Does anybody have any ideas for a MP under a $100 for me? I play on a E45 Buffet. Equivalent to the E12 nowadays.
Thanx in advance

This question comes up frequently on the board. Do a search in the archeives for mouthpiece threads and you'll come up with lots of advice. For a quick two cents though check into the Fobes Debut, Hite Premier, and Pyne. You can, in most areas, get the VanDorens for under $100. The profile 88 13 series may interest you.

I also use the M13 Profile 88, and was directed to it by my teacher for the same reasons.
They're readily available under $60. The M13 has a less open tip and more gradual curve on the rails. Do be carefule, the M13 LYRE has a tip opening and curve similar to your B45.
Don't dump the B45! This could serve you for a long time if you wash it once a week and don't pull anything through the bore.
Check out Dave Spiegelthal, a regular poster at Sneezy, for inexpensive hand finished mouthpieces that are very good. I think he charges around $40, and will send a few to try.
I have one of his that I really like for small rooms.
I think you will like the M13/88, they're pretty reliable and well made.

Matt -
When you move to a less open mouthpiece, you'll find that it's pickier about reeds. Therefore, your private teacher will probably start to teach you to work on reeds. If he or she doesn't, you should ask to learn. It's worth it.
A closer mouthpiece will sound better, and knowing how to fix reeds will make a big improvement in your playing.
Good luck.

I have a 5RV and a B45 oth of which I used before my new mouthpiece, and I really disliked my 5RV becasue the tone sounded too pinched and closed, almost nasal. And the mouthpiece is a lot chooser about which it'll let play.

If you get a mouthpiece with a more closed tip, you will need to go to a harder reed. On the Vandoren B45, the maker recommends that the equivalent of a Vandoren 2.5 to 3.5 reed be used (in other brands, that would be about a range of 3 to 4).
There's lots of good mouthpieces. I'm fond of the 5RV myself for a slightly more closed tip. Just be aware that mouthpieces like this will not have the volume of a more open mouthpiece.
Personally I believe that you could get the sound you seek out of the B45 if you work at it. It may require more embouchure development, breath support development, or a harder reed or a combination of these. It may be easier though on a mouthpiece with a more closed tip.
