I am currently playing the 4c mouthpiece that came with my YCL- 26II. That has worked fine for me so far, but I guess that I some day would like to plunge into the vast wilderness of mouthpieces out there. Could someone enlighten me about where in the range the 4c is found compared to others - I mean, how is it, when it comes to facing, tip opening etc. Medium, wide, closed, short, long ...? Just so that I have something to compare with.
I play on a Vandoren, regular, #2.5, that's fine on the 4c. I have tried Rico Grand Concert Thick , #2.5 too, which as far as I'm told is a bit softer than the Vandoren. I like the sound of the Rico, but I tend to play a bit flat with it.. Would that be better if I used those reeds on a more open mouthpiece?

I was given a Yamaha 4C plastic bass clarinet mouthpiece, and I found it to be about a medium opening/medium length facing as received. I didn't care for how it played 'out of the box'. I refaced it and did a considerable amount of interior rework also, and now it's my second-best playing mouthpiece. But it sure ain't stock no more!

I'm not the world's best clarinetist but I get a pretty acceptable sound and my music theatre audiences probably would not know the difference whether I played my 4C or my Selmer C85 120. IMHO we tend to get a bit carried away in hallowing mouthpieces. Some guys just rubbish any mouthpiece that comes with the clarinet. The main factor is the player.

Thanks to Gordon (NZ) for one again coming through with eminently sensible advice based on his experience.
IMHO, although it is not one of my favorites, the Yamaha 4C is a fine mpce which I could happily play on for the rest of my life.
Chris, before you abandon your 4C, please try playing it with slightly stiffer reeds, such as a 3 or 3 1/2 Vandoren or Rico Grand Concert. If your airstream is properly developed, the stiffer reeds will be easier to play in tune than the 2 1/2s.
If you are looking for a mpce with a wider tip opening than the 4C, you might try the Vandoren B45, which is kind of a standard for those seeking a "more open" mpce.
