Hello, I have recently been playing on a Vandoren M30 mouthpiece and have been frustrated with its performance. For the first week or so of playing on a new batch of reeds ( Rue Lepics, strength 3.5), I find the M30 to be extremely free blowing and quite satisfactory. But after the breaking in process, my reeds begin to feel soft and restrictive. The sound loses much of its core and purity. I have played around with the M30D and a few other mouthpieces my teacher has given me. My reeds feel more stable on such mouthpieces but I always come back to the M30 because I like its free blowing tendency. Has anyone else had a similar problem? And what mouthpieces are considered to be some of the more free blowing ones on the market? Thank you very much for your input. And I play on a festival with a spriggs ligature.

If you like the MP, I think it's a good one, I suggest you try other brands of reeds. It sounds like a reed problem to me. The MP doesn't make a reed get softer, the cane does. I'm a Rico artist performer so I usually recommend them. I prefer the Thick Blanks and the Reserve and Reserve Classic. It's individual for everyone as to which brand of reed works best for them. The thing that drove me away from the M30 despite it's really nice sound was the fact that the mouthpiece has a tendency to be very lacking in response. I too had the same issue with my M30 and veered off towards a custom Greg Smith Chedeville which suited my playing much better. I also would take Ed's advice in trying other reeds. Some mouthpieces don't work well with certain mouthpieces for that particular player. For example my Greg Smith doesn't like V12s. Even though Greg Smith recommends and uses them himself. I happen to use Rico Reserve Classic reeds. Experiment!

The M30 is a good sounding mouthpiece. I remember that Robert Dilutis used to touch up the tip rail before selling these. Perhaps a slight adjustment would help you.

I also find that the M30 is a good mouthpiece, but for my embouchure, 3.5 rue pec on it is like playing a 2.5 on a B40, its too soft, but if I am going to use a harder reed (eg 3.5+ or 4) then I would just play my 3.5 on B40 lyre or B40. so I have put aside my M30 for a long time already.

I would check if your reed has warped on the flat side. Also make sure the reed is not out of balance.

I haven't tried the M30, but it has a medium tip and a very long lay http://www.saxplus.com/vandoren-clarinet-mpc-info.html. Since the lay opens gradually away from the reed, any warping on the bottom of the reed will have a stronger effect than on a shorter lay.
Put the reed on a sheet of 600 black-coat sandpaper over a sheet of glass, press down hard on the bark (and not at all along the vamp) and sand the bottom flat, particularly in the area at the top of the window.
Another trick is to use a reed knife or an Exacto knife to take off a thick shaving on the bottom 3/16" at the end of the butt.
Since the lay is long, you need to put more of the mouthpiece over your lower lip than usual. Find the spot where the reed and lay separate and insert the mouthpiece so that your lower teeth are exactly underneath.

I have a re-faced M30/13 that is my regular mpc. On my Buffet RC Bb and my Lyrique A, it is fine, although on the Lyrique it plays almost too flat for 440, and I usually have to push everything in all the way.
When I've played on production M30s, I've found the lay to be uncomfortably long. That's been some time ago, and my tone quality has changed a lot, so I can't comment on the goodness of my tone on a stock M30.
My shorter lay M30/13 is very reed friendly, although I need to swap them after about 90-minutes of practice. I think that they get soggy because they are fine for a another bout of practice after a couple days of rest.
