 Selmer Pamphlets
Author: Ken Shaw 2017
Date:   2011-11-29 19:33

Selmer has posted PDFs of a number of old but good pamphlets, aimed primarily at beginners and non-clarinetist band directors, but useful for almost everyone.

http://educators.conn-selmer.com/woodwind/

Alas, they left out the most interesting one, Instructive Talks to Clarinetists by Alexandre Selmer. Selmer used to have stacks of them to hand out at instrument shows, but the only one I found today is offered for $199.

The site has a substantial archive of articles from Keynote Magazine. http://www.conn-selmer.com/archives/keynotesmagazine/archives/ I'm looking through them now. Some are good, and others are ... meh.

They have been around a while on there, but the site is unreliable. If anyone is interested in them, I suggest you save them somewhere because the site is frequently down.

Ken, Thank you very much... very helpful, as usual! Now, can you pull another rabbit out of the hat? Selmer (or a contractor of Selmer's) produced a number of vinyl records--I believe for educational purposes. I fondly remember the Delecluse/Delecluse recording of the Saint Saens sonata. If my memory is correct, Selmer also recorded Jerome Stowell playing the Erwin fantasy. Has Selmer or any agent of Selmer's recorded these to any other useable medium?

best wishes, jbjr

I still have my copy of Alex Selmers, "Instructive Talks" pamphlet. It's the main reason I spent so much time perfecting my scales in thirds when I was young. No, you can't have it.......lol

Joseph -

Selmer put out maybe half a dozen 10" LPs on the London label with a notation that they were sponsored by Selmer. I have what I'm pretty sure are the only two clarinet volumes.

London LS 1097 was Volume 1 and had Delecluse playing the Saint-Saens Sonata, the Honegger Sonatine and the Milhaud Sonatine. His tone sounded like tearing sheet metal, but the technique and musicianship were amazing. It's by far the best recording of the Saint-Seans I've heard.

London LS 1077 was Volume 2 and had the Sextuor de Clarinettes de Paris (Garde Republicaine Band members) playing the Florent Schmitt Sextour and the Raymond Loucheur En Famille. Not great music, but astonishing playing.

There were earlier 10" 78 rpm records with Delecluse paying two of the Stravinsky Three Pieces and various other stuff.

I've come across only one LP by Jerome Stowell. It's on the Audiophile label, number AP 26 and includes the Coaine from the Stanford Sonata, Jeanjean's Arabesques, Bassi's Rigoletto Fantasy and the Weber Concerto #2, all with piano. Perhaps you heard the Bassi but remembered the Meister. I listened to the LP many years ago but have no memory of it.

William -

I also have a copy of the Selmer Instructive Talks. I re-read it every few years and always learn something.

It is a shame that they don't have the Alexandre Selmer book. I have been looking for a copy for years.

Hey William, just curious, what exactly did the pamphlet say that made you practice scales in thirds? I'm not familiar with the Selmer pamphlet, but I'll keep a lookout for it.

I came across a few of the "Instructional Talks for Clarinetists" by A Selmer. If anyone is interested, I can point you to where you might find one.

I have that old record that Jack Kissinger posted details of, plus i have a saxophone one that is similar (pieces from the Paris Conservatoire etc), these were both given to me by Patrick Watters (former player in NZSO) when i was 11 years old! I'm listening to it now, man i love vinyl.

The Alexandre Selmer Instructive Talks to Clarinetists has never been reissued, but a cache of them has recently been discovered and is being offered at a reasonable price -- you know where.... [grin]

This may be a good opportunity for those with teaching studios. It is a great opportunity for players to obtain this vintage booklet at a very reasonable price.

It may be hard to find as it is not listed under the title. Try searching for "Selmer clarinet Instruction Booklet"

BTW- I have no connection to the seller, I just want to alert folks to this great opportunity as it is out of print.

To follow up, I have received my copy of the Selmer pamphlet and have beed reading it. There is a lot of great information here in a compact form. These are a valuable resource for any player or educator.

(I am surprised that Selmer has not reissued these or put the info on their site after all of these years)
