rust?

Hi my name is Jimmy and i own a wooden clarinet. recently when cleaning my clarinet, i've noticed that along the silver-plated keywork, some areas have turned an ugly orange, as if the silver decayed , or could it be rust? I'm just inquiring if anybody knows what this is and if there's any way to fix this. THanks!

There are a few possibilities. One possibility is that the silver or nickel plating has worn through and a base layer of copper plating is now showing through. Another possibility is that all of the plating layers have worn through and the base key material is now visible. In either case the proper way to fix this is to have the keys replated. You may be able to polish the keys and then use brush plating or a rub-on plating compound to touch up the affected areas but this will be a temporary fix at best.
