 Anyone heard of a "Sonora"?

Hi, i was given an Eb clarinet years ago, and i was trying to find out some information on it, the only markings on it is "sonora" and serial number 8541. it is wood (very fine grain though, at first i thought it was composite), but seems to have a plastic bell... it may have been replaced at some point... although the silver ring around the top looks identical to the others on the other joints. i have tried looking on the net for any info, and found very little, but it may have been made by O Alder?... however i cant seem to find much info about him either.

So any info anyone could give me would be very much appreciated.

Sonora was a name used by Adler and a few other B&S firms - 'Caradl' was another and there are various others.

I had an old piccolo made in 1939 which was marked Oscar Adler Markneukirchen at the top (with the eagle/sunburst logo) and 'Sonora' above the LH1 fingerplate which was a great little player. I presume the Sonora name was used in the '80s for the student level instruments, hence the plastic or ebonite bell on your clarinet. Vincent Bach International were the UK distributors of the various B&S instruments in the '80s and '90s (and probably long before that) but now they're Conn-Selmer and the various former East German makers have pretty much gone their separate ways.

Adler and Moennig are still going and pretty much the same company from what I gather - the only clarinets they offer are German and Oehler system.

Chris -

This page on the Moennig-Adler site lists Boehm clarinets. http://english.moennig-adler.de/nav_f.htm

From the price list http://english.moennig-adler.de/nav_f.htm, they appear to be student or intermediate models. The price is €1,336.13 ($1,780.66), while their top Oehler model is €5,285.71 ($7,044.26).

thanks for the info, it doesnt say anything else on mine (Oscar Adler Markneukirchen for e.g) or have any logos, so i cant be sure it is made by them.. also the one i have is an Eb but boehm system, guess they dont make them any more as i dont see any of these on their site. i was wondering if it would be worth selling mine (have no idea if it's worth anything) it seems to be old, but works well. i just have no use for it as i never play the Eb.

Oh yeah - they offer the 911 and 912 (w/LH Ab/Eb) Boehm system Bb clarinets.

What's the tuning like on your Adler Eb - is it easy to get on with? Just wondering as I had a Richard Keilwerth German bore Boehm system Eb clarinet and the tuning was all over the place on it, but they're nothing to do with Adler.

i find that it plays easily, (ive only dabbled a little with it at home) but to be honest ive never played it in an ensemble so it maybe out of tune and i wouldnt know as my ears arent tuned to Eb ;)
