I will be performing Brahm's First Sonata in June and just got the score. What a masterpiece that is !!! I'm solliciting any feedback to give a direction to my interpretation (History, little known facts etc). Also what would be your very best recorded interpretation. In other words I'm gathering all kinds of info on that sonata to be able to "discover" its mysteries and treasures. Thank you all.

I'm playing the Brahms F minor this Saturday. I didn't find a recording of it that I truly felt was the absolute "knock your socks off performance" but I like the David Shifrin recording on the Delos label. As for me playing it, every time I practice and rehearse with the pianist, I find something new in the piece I didn't know before. Overall, it needs to be played with a lot of passion and emotion. Work closely with your pianist to make sure you get your phrasing the way you want. Be patient with your pianist because it is a difficult piece for them as well. Brahms was a great pianist as well as composer. I'm sure you know it was one of the last works Brahms composed. He wrote it for Richard Muhlfield, who was a virtuoso clarinetist at the time. Good luck!
