 Greg Smith mouthpiece and reeds
Author: bstutsman

I'm trying out a Greg Smith Chicago mouthpiece. I've been playing on a Vandoren M13 Lyre and using V12 #3.5 reeds. I'm having more difficulty finding good reeds for the Greg Smith mouthpiece. Maybe I should try another brand of reed. Of those of you playing these mouthpieces, what reeds do you like? Thanks.

Maybe email Greg Smith and ask what he recommends. Obviously, the choice will ultimately depend on what *you* are comfortable with, but his recommendation might get you started in the right area.

With any mouthpiece experimentation it is important to have some new, fresh, reeds around of a variety of strengths. Generally, the V12 3.5 is what Greg Smith uses and sets the mouthpieces up for, so you shouldn't be having too big of an issue.

If the problem persists, then perhaps it's just not the mouthpiece for you.

I've played on Gregory's mouthpieces for about 8 or 9 years, and I've always used V12 3.5s, with the occasional foray into 3. I owned one mouthpiece that was really reed unfriendly, I think it was 1*. I sold it and moved on. The rest have been fantastic. Plenty of experimentation should wield results eventually.

Gee, I've found the Smith quite reed friendly. The hallmark of these mouthpieces is Greg's incredible attention to the detail of the curve down to and and including the tip - they are VERY symmetrical.

My reeds are were mainly the standard Vandorens, but I now use the 56 Rue Lepics with great success.

My Smiths are wood.

Kaspar style mouthpieces are more open and provide more resistance. If someone is used to playing a V12 3.5 on an M13 style mouthpiece, I would suggest trying V12 3's on my Chicago Kaspar style mouthpiece.

If one is used to less resistance and likes a lighter set-up (as the poster seems to prefer with that mthpc/reed combination), the 3's are more likely to play and therefore more consistent.

If the mouthpiece was not purchased personally from me, there is the possibility that the facing or other parts of the mouthpiece may have been touched in some way. This would disqualify it as my own work and could lead to differing results.

There is always the possibility that that particular Kaspar style mouthpiece is not for this particular clarinettist, especially when one is coming from a completely different style mouthpiece like an M13 with it's much closer facing and highly differing interior dimensions.

Outside of that, there are other reed equivalents to the V12 3.5 (or 3's) in the marketplace of which I would leave to others to recommend from their own personal experience.

Edited to add that I attempted to contact the poster with no results.

Further to what Gregory says about there being other reed equivalents out there, I am yet to find a style or make or reed that doesn't work with his mouthpieces. You need to pick what suits you. Some reeds that I've liked and have worked well are Vandoren V12 (of course) as well as Traditionals, Gonzalez FOF (anywhere between a 3.25 and 3.75), and Peter Luthner (Professional or Traditional work well).
