 Eb vs Bb

Do Bb and Eb clarinets share the same fingering system? The key systems look really similar but I can't find an Eb fingering chart to compare them.

Thanks.

SAME

However there are many things you (and I mean YOU) may need to do differently in the altissimo (each Eb/player combo is different) to get the intonation right.

Thanks very much!

ETA: I know that Eb clarinets have their own reeds, but would Bb reeds also work on an Eb horn?

Yes, but they're slightly too long for the Eb mouthpiece.

Cut a few centimeters off the thick end with a regular pair of scissors, just do it slowly and with even pressure to avoid splitting the cane.

Whilst the standard fingerings are the same, every Eb has different pitch tendancies and so you need to experiment a bit with fingerings to fix intonation especially up high.

Always play with a tuner!

Hope this helps,

2E.

Some of the altissimo fingerings on Eb will be different compared to Bb, so you'll have to do some experimenting to see what works best up in the stratosphere.

Regarding reeds: many players prefer to use German-style reeds, such as VD White Masters on their Eb horns, shortening the reeds by cutting off the butt end. THe slightly narrower dimension of these reeds seems to suit the Eb mouthpieces better than standard, shortened Bb French-style reeds.
